Vessel Faucet—Your Ultimate Guide

These days, more and more people are choosing vessels sinks for their bathrooms, especially those people who have a contemporary or modern bathroom. This is because vessel links have that clean and streamlined look that is the major characteristic of modern room decors or fixtures. Vessel sinks are usually installed in bathroom countertops. They replace the traditional sink that is usually installed in a sunken part of the countertop.

And if you decide to install vessel sinks for your bathroom, you should also know how to choose the right vessel faucet. Vessel faucets are especially made for vessel sinks. However, you still have to choose the right kind of vessel faucet among all the other vessel sink faucets available in the market today. To know more about this bathroom fixture, check out the list of information below.

You can choose between a countertop faucet and a wall-mounted faucet. A countertop vessel faucet is installed in the countertop and is usually much higher than the vessel sink. A wall-mounted faucet, on the other hand, is installed on the wall. Many people choose wall-mounted faucets because they save countertop space, which is especially needed if your bathroom space is limited.

These bathroom fixtures also come in different finishes. You can choose one among the following—chrome, bronze, copper, gold metallic, pewter, nickel, painted, and brass bathroom faucets. Make sure that your faucet’s finish will complement or match the finish of the other fixtures in your bathroom. It is also important to choose a finish that will be appropriate for your bathroom’s theme.

It is also important to choose other fixtures that should be installed near the vessel sink or countertop aside from the vessel faucet. You should install towel hooks, medicine cabinets, shelves for toiletries, and so on. Make sure that these fixtures and installations complement each other. To be sure, you can choose a set that has matching finishes and styles. You can buy all of your bathroom fixtures or installations from one store or shop to make sure that they complement each other. You do not want to have mismatched fixtures in your bathroom.

Another tip to consider when choosing a sink vessel faucet is the style. There are three basic styles of vessel faucet, namely, center set, single-hole, and widespread. Center set has a spigot and one handle for controlling water. Single-hole faucet has a spigot and two handles that are considered as one unit. Widespread has one spigot and two handles like the single-hole but they are considered as separate units. if you want to go for a more modern and unique look, you can choose a waterfall vessel faucet that looks as if you have a small waterfall in your sink. The faucet has a glass disk or square glass just below the part where the water comes out so that the water will fall in sheets on the sink. Installing this type of faucet is a good way to add interest to your bathroom.

Aside from these factors, it is also important to choose a bathroom vessel faucet that will complement your bathroom’s theme. Most people go for contemporary faucets because they look clean and sleek. These are usually made of stainless steel and the design looks very streamlined. If you have an Old World, Country, or Victorian style bathroom, you can choose faucets with more ornate designs. The most common finishes for these classic styles are gold plated, brass, and copper, to name a few.

It is important to know these things when choosing a faucet for your sink for you to be able to choose the right one that will suit your bathroom needs in terms of style, design, and function.

+++

If you are in the process of renovating your bathroom, you should consider using a vessel sink instead of a built-in sink in your counter top. Vessel sinks became more popular because they are very fashionable and they make your boring countertop look more attractive. If you have decided to install a vessel sink in your bathroom, the next thing you should consider is buying a vessel faucet that will perfectly go with your vessel sink.

Vessel faucets come in a wide array of styles, finishes, and types. You have to be armed with the right information to be able to find the right vessel faucet for your bathroom needs. When choosing a vessel faucet, you have to consider the following tips.

The first thing that you should consider is your needs and bathroom lifestyle. For example, if your vessel sink is small, you should consider choosing a narrow mouthed faucet that will release a narrow water flow. But if you have ample space in your vessel sink, you can choose a wide-mouthed or even a waterfall spout faucet. Waterfall faucets also add drama to your bathroom. If you share the bathroom with another person, you should consider buying a faucet that can be moved from one side to another.

You should also consider your vessel sink. If your vessel sink looks old, a brand new faucet will only emphasize your sink’s bad condition. What you can do is to replace your old sink with a new one. Or if you want, you can buy a cheap faucet for the meantime and just get a new one when you have enough money to buy a brand new vessel sink. You should also consider the sink’s style and size in choosing the right faucet.

It is also important to consider the bathroom. Determine the bathroom’s style and theme and choose a faucet that will perfectly go with the bathroom’s existing decors and theme.

Improve Your Laundry Room

A laundry sink is a great addition to your laundry room. Sometimes it is also called a laundry utility sink or tub. It is useful for common cleaning purposes and is an excellent place for soaking and hand washing of clothes. Mops and rags can also be easily cleaned if you have one of these. It is commonly located not only in laundry rooms but also in mudrooms and basements. Sinks of this type vary in sizes although most are often more than a foot deep. This simple container is an inexpensive and practical addition to help you clean the house like during mopping of floors or washing small animals.

Some people may find installing a laundry room sink old fashioned. Now that there are automatic washers and dryers available in the market, laundry sinks are becoming a thing of the past. However, they still remain to be an indispensable tool in any household, and can fulfill special purposes that most other sinks can’t. If you are planning a laundry room improvement, a laundry room sink can be the best to do it.

Laundry Utility Sink Uses

A laundry tub is used mainly for washing purposes. It is a convenient way to soak garments and hand wash delicates like hand sewn quilts. Aside from the obvious, a laundry sink also finds itself useful in many other situations. One such instance is for keeping bottled beverages cold and chilled on ice. Many times during an occasion, you may find your refrigerator full with snacks and food. You may opt for a cooler as a container for beverages but for an alternative, you laundry sink can do the job instead of a bulky cooler. Fill the tub with ice and dump in your beverages. Everyone has full access to the drinks, plus you can also free up some floor space and reduce the chances of people tripping over some bulky cooler on the floor. Another innovative way to put laundry sinks to the scene is for defrosting large quantities of meat. Use it as an extension of your kitchen where you can defrost large amounts of roast or chicken meat enough to feed a whole backyard full of guests. This will also keep your kitchen cleaner and your fridge with more space for other important things.

Material

A laundry sink can be made from metal, ceramic, or plastic composites. A stainless laundry sink is usually the top choice for most households because it is durable, lightweight, and very strong. They can also serve as metal storage shelves when you’re not using them for laundry. Ceramic sinks are the most beautiful but are sometimes more expensive. Plastic sinks are gaining popularity because aside from being lightweight and durable, they are also easily cleaned and resistant to attack by chemicals most commonly found in detergents.

Design

Style will always be a very important consideration about everything you plan to add to your home. At first glance, you may observe that these sinks are all similar, but in fact, small but important differences characterize them. Make sure you get what you really need and want. A major difference is the wall-mounted design versus the stand alone one. Decide whether you want to install a wall mounted laundry sink or will it be better if you just buy a four legged stand alone sink which is easily added to your laundry room. An important deciding factor is to consider whether or not the wall mounted can support the weight which you intend to use the sink for. If you’re planning to use it for large batches of clothes, then a standalone model can be the wise choice. Another consideration that logically follows from this is the size of the sink. Common laundry sinks can contain up to 20 gallons or more. To add beauty to your laundry room, you can use different colors to match the scheme of your house. Backsplash tiles are good enough to be aesthetically pleasing yet useful because backsplash tiles are waterproof and durable, perfect for the moist environment of the laundry room.

Cleaning Laundry Sinks

After a hard day of work, your sink deserves a thorough cleaning to bring it back to its original beauty. Routine cleaning can prevent buildup of dirt on the surface, which is harder to remove. Fortunately, cleaning laundry sinks are relatively simple. All you need is a scrubbing sponge, detergent, and bleach.

Many will claim that a laundry utility sink is a thing of the past. If you are one of the persons who disagrees to this, then you may be one of those who have used their imaginations and found new ways of exploring the endless benefits of a laundry sink.

Uses of Laundry or Utility Sinks

Laundry sinks are also known as laundry utility sinks or just utility sinks. As the name suggests, this equipment could be used not just when washing dirty clothes but also when doing other household chores. Thus, you could find them usually positioned in spots near the front or rear doors, or also near a door leading to the garage or carport. They have deeper and wider basins making them more useful than the average kitchen sink.

So here now is a quick guide on how you could use your utility sink:

Since it is spacious, laundry or utility sinks make a good spot to water plants that need some soaking. So to prevent you from having plant dirt all over your bathtub or kitchen sink, you could just place the potted flowers or plants in this sink.

The sink is also useful when doing tasks like mopping the floors. Doing so will prevent floor dirt and chemicals used for floor mopping from getting to your kitchen sink.

Large, laundry sinks also makes a perfect place to wash smaller animals like dogs and (if you’re brave enough), cats. They are especially good if your pet isn’t too fond of the water and does a lot of wiggling. Having a deeper sink basin and an area that you’re OK with a bit of a mess makes things much easier on you. And in turn, this makes things easier on your beloved pet, too.

Its practical use also includes cleaning up of big messes. So if you have just fixed your car or if your kids have just come in from play, you and your kids could wash those filthy hands in this sink. If your kid’s muddy shoes are also a problem, you could wash them all up in this type of tub. Many a mud covered football or soccer uniform, along with all the accompanying gear, has found it’s way being marched back to the laundry utility sink after initially being brought in (very briefly), to the main house.

Outdoor utility sinks that have smaller basins are also perfect if you want to clean up after gardening. Some of these outdoor sinks also have slots where garden hose could be attached.

Designating a laundry utility sink in your home could really help in promoting cleanliness as they serve as a “mess area.” Here, you could have all the extreme messes without having to worry about the rest of the house. So if you want to maintain the cleanliness of your home efficiently, this type of sink could be your best friend.

Not until fairly recently was it that the sight of a vessel sink wasn’t considered kind of a novelty. This just is not the case anymore. It seems that everywhere you look these days, the vessel sink can be seen; in resort lavatories, conference centers, upper end homes as well as your average new home is typically given the choice of having vessel sinks instead of the traditional undermount sinks. For me anyway, I find this a particularly appealing trend.

Like other sinks, a bathroom vessel sink has a large range of materials from which it can be created. The nice novel twist to consider is the “vessel sink vanity”, or surface upon which you place it. While there are a few considerations that need to be remembered, it seems the creativity of using just about anything you can think of, ranging from modern minimalist designs to antique tables, has added a lot to the sector of kitchen and bathroom sinks with the vessel sink.

However, regardless of the style, beauty and attractiveness of a vessel sink, there are a couple of things that need to be kept in mind and treated scrupulously when deciding to go this route. For example, having such a lot of the bowl exposed above the level of the counter top, the chances of things bumping into and nicking, chipping or cracking the bowl exists. Even though the materials used for vessel sinks often include concrete, granite, marble and glass, materials that can withstand a fair amount of use and abuse, is still not uncommon to read about a decent number of pissed off owners who discover chips or cracks in their glass vessel sinks.

One choice that many folk may want to think about is going with a copper vessel sink. Clearly you will not run the danger of chips and cracks the way you do with a non-metallic material, so that is a added benefit. However, with copper particularly, you do get the upkeep needs of keeping it clean so that it doesn’t tarnish over time . Naturally some people like the patina look of an aged copper, in which case this is a moot point.

One other thing worth indicating is the sound made by the water when it hits the bowl. With a solid stone vessel sink you will have a particularly quiet experience. If you decide to use copper or some other metal you can most likely can expect to experience a louder, ‘tinny’ sound. This isn’t always bad, it’s just something that you maybe had not thought about and it could end up being a regret for some folk.

While vessel sinks are more often than not installed on some kind of custom fabricated surface made from either marble or granite, you are by no means limited to this approach. Many people have found using a unique antique piece of furniture creates a stunning and utterly unique sink. The sole issue with going this route is that it will not be coming from a manufacturer who is acquainted with creating the surface ready to accept the vessel sink. Nonetheless, as the ‘customization’ is really not all that complicated to do, you should have no problem finding someone capable of retrofitting whatever piece of furniture you would like to whatever sink you ultimately decide on (remember to find an appropriate vessel sink faucet to go with it!).

At the end of the day, just have fun! Be creative and think out of the box. Clearly, if you’re thinking about a vessel sink, thinking ‘outside the box’ is something that comes rather naturally to you.

When it’s time to build or renovate, among the many decisions you’ll need to make include what kind of kitchen sinks and bathroom sinks (and possibly bar sinks) you want in your house. Just like everything else in this world today, our choices are practically endless. We’ll take a brief look at a few of these options as well as some of the options that go with these options, in this article. The subject is far too vast and opinions are far too varied for any definitive work here. However, if you’re at the very beginning, planning stages, perhaps this article will help you uncover a few possibilities.

For the moment, let’s just talk about kitchen sinks. Of course this space that you have to work with will be a significant determining factor in a type of kitchen sink you choose. For example, if you have a lot of room and like the rustic look, you might consider a farmhouse kitchen sink. The farmhouse think, also called an apron front sink, is what you might imagine in old-fashioned country home. A sink so big and deep you could fit the largest cooking pot in it easily and still have room left over. In fact you could easily use it as a bathtub for a baby, the way it was often used “back in the day”.

“Back in the day”, these big farmhouse kitchen sinks were most often made of porcelain. Today however, you can find them in all the materials from which sinks are made including granite, marble, concrete, stainless steel, glass and copper sinks. For that real rugged, rustic look, a hammered copper farm sink fits the bill perfectly. If you decide to go this route, just make sure the copper used in the manufacturing of your sink is 100% lead-free.

If the look you’re going after is much more of a modern look, then something like a vessel sink might be ideal. It’s funny, because the vessel sink is probably the oldest basic design for a sink (think of a big bowl sitting atop a counter). Nonetheless, these days it seems that in many modern establishments such as fancy resorts, restaurants, and hotels, the vessel sink is being used more and more frequently. Once again the material used can be anything from copper to porcelain to wood. However, some of the classiest, most modern looking varieties are the stainless steel and glass vessel sinks.

One more thing you’ll need to decide on when choosing your style of sink is the sink faucet. (This is what I referred to above as “the options for the option”). And once again your choices will be vast. One name that may not immediately come to mind but that should definitely be on your list for investigation is Danze faucets.

Danze is a relatively young plumbing company that started in the year 2000. However, despite their young age, they have managed to roll out over 1800 products, becoming the fastest growing plumbing company in the United States. Along the way they have won awards including the innovation award given out by Home Builder Executive in 2009 while creating faucets that saves over 40% on water as compared to a regular faucet. Their various collections range from ultra modern and sleek to contemporary Victorian, and everything in between. All the while their customers have raved about the ease-of-use of installation, the customer support, and the value for the dollar spent. Danze is definitely a name worth knowing when it comes to sinks, faucets, showers and other plumbing supplies.

As mentioned at the beginning, sinks and faucets are only a small part of home construction and/or renovation. Nonetheless, it is often the details that make the difference. Whether you intend to occupy your new space for years to come or if you are hoping to maximize the dollars invested by seducing buyers, making wise choices in sinks, faucets, and other kitchen, bath and bar accessories will be worth your while.

If you’ve spent any time looking at newer luxury homes, or even some more involved kitchen or bathroom renovations, there’s no doubt you’ve seen some glass bathroom sinks, often referred to as vessel sinks. Their popularity has grown for good reason. On the one hand glass sinks can truly be unique pieces of art to proudly own and display with their own special lighting. On the other hand, the influx of mass-produced, lower-cost varieties of these unique pieces of art make them very accessible to the masses. As such, you can hardly go to a fancy restaurant, hotel, or conference hall without coming across one of these glass vessel sinks. Not that there’s anything wrong with that… the wide range of styles and varieties means that you are unlikely to come across in the exact same look twice running. Very nice.

If you’re just starting your research into glass sinks you might not have any idea what kind of price to expect. Well, you can expect a pretty wide price range. You could probably find one for as little as about $100, or you could easily pay $5000 or more (as mentioned above, as a piece of art created by skilled craftsmen, there really is no top-end to the potential price). Of course, like anything else, you get what you pay for. That doesn’t mean that the lower end glass sinks are bad. It’s simply that they are mass-produced (often in Asia), certainly not unique one from the other, and the quality and durability of the glass may not be quite as good as some others.

On the other hand, the higher end glass sinks often come from craftsmen and artisans in Europe and the United States (some of them are even signed by the artist who makes it). Due to the fact that they are handmade, each sink is completely unique and takes much longer to manufacture. This translates to a much higher price.

Let’s take a quick look at how these glass sinks are made. There are a few basic ways in which classes worked with; cold glass, warm glass, and hot glass.

Cold glass involves working with it at room temperature basically with carving, etching, stained glass mosaics.

Warm glass is the process used by most mass-producing glass sink manufacturers as well as some of the craftsman/artisans. In this process the glasses worked with temperatures that range between 1100 and 1700°F. The glasses warmed enough to be pliable and is then “slumped” into a mold or form. You can imagine this occurring in a production line fashion. However, warm glass slumping can also be used quite creatively.

The glass is heated enough, two pieces can be worked together, then cooled, to produce a single uniform piece of glass. Glass makers will often do this using glass of various colors, mixing them into unique, beautiful patterns before eventually using the slump method to form their glass sink.

Finally, there is the “hot glass”. As you may have witnessed at some point watching a glass blower make ornaments or jewelry, the same technique on a larger scale can be used in the formation of vessel sinks. The term hot glass is by no means a misnomer… this technique uses temperatures of 2200°F or more. The liquidity and malleability of glass at this temperature allows for a tremendous amount of variation… as long as you have a tremendous amount of skill. When a glass sink his created using this technique is followed by a slow cooling process in an annealing oven.

Many people when they begin to look at glass sinks are concerned about their durability. The truth is glass sinks can be every bit as durable as a traditional porcelain sink. While it’s certainly true that a heavy, hard object dropped into a glass sink could crack or break it, chances are that a porcelain sink wouldn’t fare any better. And porcelain sinks have been serving us solidly and reliably for a long time. You may want to avoid extreme temperature changes of greater than 70° to a glass sink to ensure you don’t have any problems with it. However, that kind of thermal shock would probably only occur if you are poor boiling water (greater than 212°F) into it. Truthfully, why would you ever need to do that in a bathroom sink?

Finally, cleaning a glass bathroom sink is a piece of cake. It’s no different than any other piece of glass. You can use any kind of standard glass cleaner that does not contain any ammonia to clean it, and if water spots eventually show up, you can use a solution of water and vinegar to easily take care of that.

So as you can clearly see, a glass bathroom sink need not be limited to only the luxury homes, fancy restaurants and posh resorts Anybody looking to add a little class, style and uniqueness to their bathroom vanity can surely find a glass bathroom sink that will suit their needs at a price that they can be comfortable with.

Whether you’re building new or remodeling an existing home, when it comes to your sinks, be it a kitchen sink, bathroom sink or bar sink, you owe it to yourself to look at Danze faucets for your sink hardware. If you’re not an industry insider or haven’t been paying attention in the past few years, you might not be familiar with the name Danze. It’s really no wonder considering they’ve only been around since 2000. However, they are now the fastest growing plumbing company in the United States. And there are plenty of good reasons for this growth. This short article will outline some of those and, hopefully, by the end of it you will be inspired to take a closer look at Danze faucets and other plumbing supplies.

First of all, it doesn’t matter whether your priority is functionality or aesthetics… Danze faucets will surpass your expectations on both fronts. As they state themselves, their products are “art that’s designed to be used”. They don’t overlook one side of the coin in favor of the other. While it will be up to you to look at the multitude of designs and make a decision for yourself as to which one you find to be most attractive and appropriate for your needs, let’s take a quick look at the functional side of Danze.

The following list of construction specifications and quality standards applied throughout all of Danze’s products including kitchen faucets, bathroom faucets, shower faucets and showerheads, as well as all other broader plumbing accessories which includes the likes of vanities, pedestal sinks and vessel sinks and toilets and toilet accessories.

Danze products come with a limited lifetime warranty against defects. All of their faucets are built with ceramic disc valves and heavy pattern brass construction standard, which allows for their no drip guarantee. With many people’s attention focused on “going green”, you can feel good knowing that Danze faucets typically save 40% on water as compared to a regular faucet. And of course there waterways are always completely leadfree.

Now let’s take a look at aesthetics. Again, although Danze is a relatively young company, they currently have over 1800 products and growing. Some of their more popular collections include the Parma collection and the Opulence collection. Considering the fact that photographs don’t even do justice to the quality and workmanship of these products, certainly words will not either.

The Danze Parma collection is based largely on a clean, crisp lines in a very minimalist design concept. Very simple, yet refined offered in chrome or brushed nickel finish. This is a very classy line.

On the other hand there is the Danze Opulence collection inspired by the Victorian era. A beautiful combination of old world elegance with all the benefits of modern technology built-in. Although a completely different look from a completely different era than the Parma collection, there is a timelessness associated with quality. This can be seen throughout all the Danze kitchen, bath and bar faucets collections.

If this brief Danze faucet review hasn’t convinced you to include them in your potential final choice for your faucet needs, take a brief moment to look over some other reviews found online. The vast majority of the reviews are overwhelmingly positive. From attractiveness to ease of installation to price and value Danze faucets always seem to come out among the very best.

For anyone looking for a quick, easy, inexpensive and effective way to spruce up your bathtub and bathroom in general, curved shower rods are your answer. I remember the first time I saw one; my wife and I were staying in a very high-end resort, courtesy of my company. We were thrilled to have a few days in such luxury and we were soaking in every small aspect of it. In fact, there was not only a giant soaking tub large enough for the two of us in the bathroom, in addition to that there was also your standard bathtub and shower set up. My wife immediately made use of the soaking tub and it wasn’t until the next morning that I used the shower/bath and immediately noticed how much extra room these luxury showers had. However, I looked down I realized that the tub was the standard sized tub, the same width as ours at home. So why did it feel so big? Then I realized that they were utilizing curved shower rod’s to create extra space.

I had never seen it before. But what a brilliant idea! Without needing to do anything physical to the tub itself, suddenly there was a whole lot more elbow room and the whole thing just felt much more spacious (in fact, it IS more spacious). The simple fact of arcing the shower rod adds at least 25% to 35% more room between the wall and the shower curtain. Another way to think about it is that you have about an extra 6 inches in width. And the inserts for the curved shower rod didn’t look any different than your standard shower and, so this is wonderful news.

As soon as we got home I started doing a bit of research. It’s easy enough to do these days with a quick Google search or visit to Amazon.com for example. I found that curved shower rod’s were readily available and surprisingly inexpensive. Maybe it shouldn’t have been too surprising since it’s more of a creative breakthrough in any kind of technological one. I was on my way to getting one for both of our bathrooms.

One of the design features that I liked about these shower curtain rods was that they have about a 3 inch curve-in at each end of the bar. So while the middle of the shower space gets plenty of additional room, they make sure that the ends come in words far enough to prevent water from splashing or leaking out. It also helps prevent lighter shower curtains from blowing in on you.

You can benefit from these curved shower curtain rods regardless of whether you have a square bathtub or oval shaped tub. They come in several different finishes including chrome, brushed nickel, oil rubbed bronze or your standard white bathroom shower curtain look. Depending on the brand that you get, it may come with rolling shower curtain hooks. These folks have ball bearing-type systems that help facilitate opening and closing of the shower curtain. The ease with which these kind of shower curtain hooks move just adds to the little touches of luxury, And they can work with all shower curtains from your standard variety to your extra long shower curtains or your kids shower curtains.

The end brackets used to mount the curved shower curtain rods are included. There is nothing particularly unique or difficult about installing them, and you don’t need any unusual tools to do the job. Perhaps you only difference is the use of an Allen screw to ensure the arc of the curtain rod stays parallel with the floor instead of being pulled downward by gravity. However, in situations like this, the necessary allen wrench is always included so there’s no need to worry about that issue. Simply install it like you would any other shower rod. But once you start using it, you’ll realize that this isn’t your standard shower any longer. Curved shower rods will transform the humblest of the home bath tub showers into a mini luxury shower.

While a copper farm sink is a stunning piece of furniture for any home, you may not be totally sure what one is. If you stop for a moment and imagine a very old country home, you very well may picture an enormous sink in the kitchen; this is known as a farmhouse sink or apron front sink. More often than not, the traditional varieties of these enormous sinks were made out of porcelain. However, considering how old copper is as a utilitarian metal, there is little doubt that giant copper sinks are by no means something new. With that said though, there is a growing interest in having these copper farm sinks installed in kitchens that are being built a new as well as those undergoing a kitchen remodel. In this article we will take a quick look at the copper farm sink in what you may want to consider if you are in the market for one. First of all, when considering the real farmhouse sink, you’ll need to make sure that you have the appropriate room for one. These things are big. Remember, in the days from which these sinks originate, things in the kitchen were quite different than today. There certainly was no automatic dishwasher. Often times cooking was done on a much larger scale than the typical American family today. As such, very large cookware was used and therefore needed a lot of room for a lot of depth or washing. In addition, these sinks or used for other useful purposes such as bathing a baby… and that “baby” may well have used that washbasin for several years.

The point is, we’re not talking small kitchen sinks here. Additionally, because of its size and depending on the material used, an apron front sink (“Apron front sink” is just another name for a farm sink or farm house sink), can be quite heavy. You’ll need to make sure that your counter structure or whatever you choose to use to hold your farm think it’s adequately strong to support it. Many of these sinks can weigh upwards of 400 pounds so you won’t want to take any chances.

Now if you’re considering a copper farmhouse sink you want to make sure of a few things. First of all, you want to be sure that the copper used is of the utmost quality. With the growing popularity of copper sinks many are arriving from Third World countries with questionable sourcing of their copper. A common elements found in lower grade, in pure copper is lead. Clearly, with all the dangers of lead poisoning associated with paints used on the walls, the last thing you want is a lead based kitchen sink. Any copper sinks that come made in the USA are sure to be lead-free. In addition, most of the copper sinks coming out of Mexico are also safe for use. In fact, if you’re looking for a hammered copper farm sink, many of the finest models do come from Mexican craftsmen.

Between the old world charm of a farm sink in general, plus the added warmth and timelessness of copper in general, having a copper farm sink in your kitchen will undoubtedly create a very appealing, homey feeling that is certain to please.

A very common, and very annoying problem many people have with bathroom sinks, in particular older bathroom sinks, is that of loud, squeaky faucets. Considering your bathroom sink is often one of the first places you visit when you wake up in the morning, as well as one of the last stops before getting a good night’s sleep, having a stubborn, annoying, squeaky bathroom sink faucet is a real drag. Certainly there are bigger issues to be concerned with the world today… nonetheless, if this article can give you just a little bit of respite from this minor inconvenience, it will be well worth the few minutes you spend reading it.

When talking about squeaky bathroom sink faucets (or kitchen sink faucets for that matter), we’re really talking about two different possibilities. The first is the handles themselves. Sometimes, over time, they become less and less cooperative and start to get really difficult to turn. In addition, as you turn them, they squeak and grind. The second “squeaking” noise that can occur is the result of water running through the faucet. Actually, the word “squeaking” is more of an understatement than anything with this particular problem. Many people refer to it as “squealing”, “screaming”, “a shrill, high-pitched whistle”… you get the idea. Bottom line, it’s not pleasant.

Let’s take a look at the first situation.

Surprisingly, one possibility that you should check out first (though honestly, this probably will not be your issue, but it’s worth checking…), is the screws on the faucet handles themselves. Often times a simple tightening of these screws is enough to put an end to this squeaking. If this quick fix doesn’t do the trick, many people will reach for the WD-40. It’s understandable; it’s quick, convenient, and usually helps the problem at hand… for a while. The thing is, WD-40 does work for a little while, but eventually (in fact, usually sooner than later), it dries out. And when it does, you will be worse off than you were before. A much better bet is to make a quick trip to your local hardware store or Home Depot. There you can pick up a bit of silicone grease, which is what a plumber would use on internal parts like this.

If in the process of taking a closer look at your bathroom faucet you find that it is really very old and starting to corrode (especially if it is any kind of pewter metal), chances are you’re going to need to replace it. This is just a simple case of things wearing out with time. Once again, your friendly Home Depot, Lowe’s or local hardware store should have a good selection of faucets to choose from in a wide range of prices. But remember, you get what you pay for. If you’re not planning on getting the bargain basement variety, taking a look at Danze faucets would be well worth your while. A brand that is quickly establishing itself in the plumbing world for the value, quality, and aesthetic attractiveness.

Now let’s take a good look at the other “squeaky faucet” situation.

Here, I’m afraid, you might need a plumber’s intervention. However, there are a few things you can check before making that call and spending that money. One possible reason your sink might be shrieking is that you have air in the lines. You can pick up a thing called an ‘air arrestor’ in the plumbing section of your home improvement store. Installation is usually quite simple and any of the sales staff should be able to give you a quick explanation of how to do it.

The second possibility that you might be able to address is that the stem may be loose where it goes into the faucet body. If this is the case, the noise is coming from water rushing past it causing it to vibrate quickly. Simply tightening up the stem should eliminate the noise if this is the problem.

While it’s true that sometimes a professional plumber is absolutely needed in these situations, other times there are simple fixes that you can take care of yourself. This isn’t rocket science. If you’ve been pulling your hair out because your sink is squeaking or shrieking at you, hopefully now you can do something to put an end to it once and for all.
